Troubleshooting Magnetos - all things that make spark
by Kenneth Weaver
Noon Thurs, June 18, Building B
Kenneth lived the early part of his life in Lancaster County, PA. He moved to Ohio in 1994 to farm and in 1998 he opened Weaver’s Magneto Repair. Kenneth doesn’t do much farming; although there is still large blueberry patch to maintain, magnetos are his full-time job.
His driving motto is quality and original. That is how he approaches his work on magnetos, points, condensers, distributors, plug wires and spark plugs.
Kenneth’s seminar will cover the components that make fire in a cylinder. He will have examples to view as well as his troubleshooting guide in a handout. He will also have available to purchase a condenser testing instrument that he assembles in his shop.
If you want a better understanding of how to improve spark on an old tractor, don’t miss this one.
John Deere Custom 60 MFWD and 60 Crawler
by Tim Sweeney
Thurs., June 18, 2:00 p.m., Building B
Tim will share his story of how these concepts came to him and eventually turned into a reality. These masterpieces of design and construction have been featured in many magazines (including Green Magazine), newspapers and other media.
If you are interested in the details behind the development of the plan, and how the 60 MFWD and 60 Crawler came to life, join him for about an hour.
There will be discussions starting with design and ending with the final working tractor/ crawler.
Tim is from Somerset, and runs his John Deere Power Repair business from there.

He will explain the requirements for Working Load Limits of tie downs, the specific way certain equipment has to be strapped down and his general inspection procedure when performing USDOT roadside inspections on commercial motor vehicles.
MCE Inspector will relate, through his many years of experience, the stories of incidents that he has been involved with while doing truck inspections. His real-life stories will further illustrate the need for safety with these larger and heavier vehicles.

The History of the Model G
In the mid 1930’s, Deere was starting to produce its brand new row crop tractors, the model A and model B, but still saw the need for a larger row crop to compete with Farmall’s F-30. In 1936, to fill this need, Deere began testing their prototype designated KX with the goal of making a 36-horsepower tractor capable of pulling a three-bottom plow. This tractor was originally planned to be the model F, the next letter designation that Deere had not yet used on their tractors, but to alleviate any possible confusion with its competitor, the F-30, it was decided that the new tractor would be called the model G.

The unstyled G was put into production in 1937, advertised as a three- plow tractor with enough power to handle a variety of tasks. One problem that Deere faced in the early production of the unstyled G was that tractors in warmer climates were having issues with overheating. This problem was due to the fact that the tractor was designed to maintain the higher engine temperatures necessary to burn heavier fuels, but this design worked a little too well and caused the engines to overheat while under a heavy load and in a warm climate. To combat this, Deere began making changes to the cooling system and eventually instituted a field modification program that would include adding a taller radiator. Some tractors, however, never received the updated parts and are now known as “low radiator” models and are more desirable to collectors. Even though most of Deere’s tractors got the new “styled” appearance in
1939, due to its lack of popularity, the unstyled version of the G was produced until 1941.
In 1941, Deere began the process of styling the model G to make it seem less antiquated when compared to the A and B. All they had to do was take the styling of the other row crop tractors and adjust it to fit the larger size of the G. The only problem they faced was that they had changed the exhaust and air cleaner on the A and B to be in the center of the hood, but on the G doing this would have required major changes to be made.
Because of this, they left the stacks next to each other, as the unstyled tractors had been. Besides styling, Deere made many other changes to modernize the G, including
Showbook page 28
adding a six-speed transmission, lights, electric start, and many other changes to make it a more desirable option for farmers. By 1942, the new styled G was ready for production, but at this time, World War II was in full swing, and the US had imposed price controls which would not allow Deere to increase the price of the G enough for them to make a profit. To get around this, they introduced the new tractor as the GM, or G modernized. This let them set whatever price they wanted since the GM was a new model.
In 1947, with the war being over, Deere was free to change the designation of the GM back to just being the G. There were no major changes made along with the new change in designation, but soon after, Deere made some much-needed changes. The most easily noticeable change was the switch to a battery box seat, as the GM and the first styled G’s still had a pan seat. There were many refinements made throughout the production of the styled G, but nothing major was needed to make it a reliable workhorse. It retained the cast iron frame that on the A and B had been updated to be a pressed steel frame, and never got a fully enclosed flywheel cover like its row crop counterparts had received. The G was produced until it was replaced by the 70 in 1953.

The History of the 10 Series of New Generation
In August of 1960, nearly 6000 people from John
Deere dealers around the US and Canada were transported to Dallas, Texas, for Deere
Day, where Deere’s new line of tractors would be introduced. These new tractors were referred to as Deere’s
“New Generation of Power”, and included the 1010, 2010, 3010,
4010, and 8010. These new tractors had been redesigned in every way and were only recognizable as a John Deere by their trademark green and yellow paint. The largest change, however, was internal. Deere had abandoned its two-cylinder design that had been used on every tractor up until now, for a vertical inline 4 or 6 cylinder engine.
Deere began experimenting with using four-cylinder engines in their current two-cylinder frames as early as 1950, but by 1953, they saw the need to completely redesign a tractor that would be competitive in the coming market. Originally, they wanted to use a “V”
style engine, both to set them apart from their competitors and so that more parts could be interchangeable between engines. They planned to use a V4, V6, or V8, depending on the size of the tractor, but quickly ran into issues. Since Deere wanted to keep the frames of these tractors thin, to achieve maximum operator visibility, they had to abandon the preferred 60-degree angle between cylinders for a smaller 45-degree design. This design, however, created new problems such as worse reliability and temperature issues. In 1956, Deere swapped their efforts back to using inline 4 and 6 cylinder engines.
At their release in 1960, Deere’s lineup consisted of completely new machines. Henry Dreyfuss Associates, the same group that had worked with Deere since 1937, got the job of updating the looks and comfort of the new tractors. The general look of the tractors was made to be more sleek and modern, moving away from the outdated look of the two-cylinder. With this complete redesign, they were able to update many comfort and usability features. The seat was changed to be more comfortable and usable for
Showbook page 30
people of all heights. It could move forward and backward, but on an incline to keep the operator's knees at a comfortable angle, no matter their height. It could also be quickly released and moved to the back to give the operator room to stand, and easily moved back to a preselected sitting position. The whole operator's station was redesigned to be more convenient, putting the shifter to the right of the steering wheel on the dash, and the implement controls to the left. This was a major step up from the two-cylinder tractors, which had the shifter on the floor and the implement controls in multiple places that made them inconvenient to operate. Deere released most of the 10 series at Deere Days in 1960, but there were still multiple models released after the fact. Even though it had already been in development for as long as the rest of the series, the 5010 was not ready for release in 1960. It was not until 2 years after Deere Day, in August of 1962, that the first 5010’s were shipped out. At the time, the 5010 was the first two-wheel drive tractor to demonstrate more than 100 drawbar horsepower. It was Deere’s largest tractor you could get before stepping up to the four-wheel drive articulated 8010. The 2510 was another model that was released after the rest of the 10 series. It was the last of the series, and was introduced in August of 1965, and was effectively an upgrade from the 3010 without making the step up in power and price to a 3020. The 2510 ended the line of the ten series of New Generation, ending with the 1968 model year.
